Een visueel avontuur
Thibo Moreels (Belgium) develops a hybrid practice between sculpture and painting. In both media he explores what moves us yet cannot be grasped: the tension between the tangible and the ephemeral, the visible and the invisible. His sculptures are made from found remnant materials, objects that have lost their original function but retain a physical or emotional charge. He assembles, rearranges and binds them, often with rope and thread, into forms that hover between recognition and estrangement. The rope is more than a functional connection; it speaks of connection, restriction and protection. Built from fragile, transient elements, the works seem to have been brought together only temporarily, in a precarious balance.
In his oil paintings of imaginary landscapes and invented flower motifs, layering, suggestion and the interplay of revealing and concealing play a central role. At first glance they appear still and introspective, but beneath the surface they carry the same tension as his sculptures. Some canvases are wrapped in rope or thread, so that part of the image is withdrawn from view and the painting becomes a play between appearing and disappearing. For Moreels, sculpture and painting are not opposites but a continuing dialogue, an inquiry into how images come into being, fade, are enveloped and appear again.
Moreels first showed his work in the solo exhibitions Color Is My Religion (Gallery Bernice, Sint-Niklaas, 2019) and Mutualism (Gallery Art-Uur, Lier, 2019). In 2022 he won a prize at De Makers in Maldegem, and in 2024 his work was part of the group exhibition Polychroom (Poortersloge, Bruges). In 2025 his work was shown in Ambigu at Stek Art in Torhout, where he has exhibited several times and where his work is currently on view. In 2026 he presented the duo exhibition Under the Same Spell (Gildhof, Tielt). Moreels is represented in the Netherlands by Galerie Wilms and will present his work at PAN Amsterdam in 2026.

In 2026 presenteerde hij de duotentoonstelling Under the Same Spell (Gildhof, Tielt).
